The beautiful art of The Aristocats (1970)

I was looking for you yesterday
Like a sick puppy waiting for its master to come home
I keep forgetting we’re not family
You owe me nothing just as I owe you nothing
And so we go on our separate paths
Yet wishing the other would stumble along ours
Because we are too proud to even ask
If we could walk side by side
And share the same path to travel on

I listened to Alis Bayan Box again after so long. I think it was my first time to bawl like a baby here in Hong Kong it’s so embarrassing. Whenever I get sick or exhausted or lonely especially during holidays, that’s when I really feel like an OFW.

Alis Bayan Box written and composed by William Elvin Manzano (demo copy for Rizal X)

Isisilid ko sa kahon
Ang lahat ng alaala
Isisilid ko ang ngayon
Para sa bukas
Kung mayroon man ito

Maghihigpit ng sinturon
Magigipit din ng pag-ibig
Mga retaso’y gugupit-gupitin
At babaunin, sisikaping
Pagtagpi-tagpiin sa pagbalik

Walang katiyakan sa aking paglisan
Bibitbitin ang lahat
Kahon at maleta
Tadhanang roleta
Ano ba ilalahad?
Papalayong ililipad
Saan mang bayang mapadpad
Mailap ang kalarang hinahangad

Itataya ko na sa hangin
Ang bawat pangarap ko’t hiling
Lahat ng dagat na kailangan kong tawirin
Ay maaring higupin
Tuluyang lunurin
Kahon ng kinabukasan kong nakasilid

Sa paglisan kong ito,
Ang puso ko’y iiwan ko sa yo.

FILM: Every Little Step

Every Little Step is a documentary following the casting of 2005 Broadway revival of A Chorus Line. Parallel to its original broadway story, this documentary gives a sneak peak of how tedious and humbling it is for performers to get into a Broadway show — from lining up in the cold, struggling to make it to the first cut, dance auditions, song auditions, monologues then the excruciating wait for the callbacks.

Suddenly, the movie isn’t just about Chorus Line — it’s about pursuing a dream — the American dream, the sacrifices and what you do for love. I think everyone should see it.

I’ve never really talked much about my job in my blog. Maybe because it’s what I do everyday and I wish to have an outlet for other things. But yes, I am a performer myself. And even if it gets tough sometimes, I am still very lucky to be performing full time and getting good compensation for it. It’s tough being a theater actor back in the Philippines. For one, there isn’t really big money in it unless you get into really big and long running shows which are rare these days. Two, you’re not only competing with fellow theater performers but you’re also competing against showbiz personalities. That one is even more heartbreaking for us who have been training all our lives only to be put on the sidelines by bigger names that keep ticket sales up and draw bigger publicity.

Performing, in general, can be considered a short-lived career. I honestly have no idea how long I shall be doing it and it’s scary thinking about it sometimes because it’s how I define myself: I’m a performer. Of all the things I can do, it’s my 10. Drawing can be an 8 or a 7 but performing? singing dancing and acting? Those are my 10s. And I am happiest doing it.

Clinics are closed because of Chinese New Year. (3) fresh cherries and blueberries from the market (4) an illustration of my favorite Wes Anderson movie, The Royal Tenenbaums. I used to draw and paint on shoes back when I was young, carefree and fearless. I actually miss my old self — coming up with random things to do and actually doing it. It’s precisely THAT that I’m determined to become again.

“If you’re twenty-two, physically fit, hungry to learn and be better, I urge you to travel - as far and as widely as possible. Sleep on floors if you have to. Find out how other people live and eat and cook. Learn from them- wherever you go.” — Anthony Bourdain

Today is Miguel’s 27th birthday. I had a rainbow cake delivered to him this morning to make turning 27 more bearable and colorful!

I’m such a hipster.

On being cool like Jeff Bridges.

Jeff Bridges has the best personal website I’ve come across online. Take a look at the photography page and you’ll be amaze at the photos. Here are some photos of the making of True Grit, which we loved by the way. Amazing remake.

Intimate Portrait on the Dragon Lady

Meryl Streep is one of my favorite actresses of all time. This is a great feature by Brigitte Lacombe’s on set portraits of meryl streep at nowness:
